The sun never expects anything in return, and neither will I
To be a hidden operator requires being thankless. I can handle that among strangers because I’ll most likely never interact with them. But with friends and those closest to me, it hurts knowing that caring deeply about them in this way often means it will never be reciprocated.
I don’t want this negative energy or mindset to exude out of me and flow into others. I have to kill the ego another layer so I never have the expectation of a thank you, not even an acknowledgement. I wonder if this kind of ego death comes naturally when you become a parent.
I want to become someone who no longer needs that recognition. There’s a beautiful quote that helps eliminate that desire: “Even after all this time, the sun never says to the earth, ‘You owe me.’ Look what happens with a love like that. It lights the whole sky.” I can’t seem to find the original author, but whoever strung those words together must have been capable of immense love. It’s the same feeling I get from ‘any love I made you feel is yours to keep.’ That feeling of abundance - that kind of beauty - is what will reinforce my desire for my contributions as a hidden operator to always be unconditional.
